The Black Collared Red Head Barbet
Hello there, TrudyVan here
I love the garden birds that visit my garden. If you want birds to visit your garden you need to have drinking water availiable at all times and it is also a good idea to put out fruits and seeds for them to eat. The Black Collered Barbets that we have in our garden eat our grapes right off the vine.
They are always in a group of about 6 to 8. Their latin name: Lybius torquatus
Their colouring:
Head and throat are red with a black ring or collar, red eyes with a back bill. Black legs and it's back is brown.
The black collared barbets Habitat
It is found in sub-Saharan Africa, South Africa. The black collared barbet loves open grasslands, gardens, forests, trees, open farmlands with trees.
The Barbets Behaviour
They are always in pairs and are monogamous and will only find another partner when the one dies. They love perching and live, feed and roost in groups.
Their Feeding Habits
They love fruits and berries, as well as insects such as flies, locusts, ants, bees, wasps
Build
They have a height of about 20cm.
I love nature and birds in particular. I am sure you will enjoy them as much as I do.
Kindest regards
TrudyVan

Beautiful hub, my friend. I noticed yesterday morning when I was awake earlier than usual that we have 2 bluejays in our maple tree. They were watching me through the window, nice an plump, not sure if they're just passing through but I wasn't quick enough to get a photo of them. Beautiful shades of blue and black. Your Black collared Barbets are just gorgeous. Thank you for sharing them with us.
Love barbets - crested or black collared! We hear the crested variety quite a lot here but don't see them too often. Balck collared hardly ever see except in the Austin Roberts Bird Park - maybe I should do a Hub on that sometime soon, what do you think? I love going there.
Love and peace

Gorgeous birds. Like you, I love watching the birds in our garden. My favorite is the little towhee, with its sassy 'meow'. They have become really bold this summer, but, alas - no photos.
Such a pretty bird. We love birds we don't get the colorful ones like you have but ours are pretty. Enjoyed your hub.
well done
hi there...I live in Secunda near JHB and have discovered these birds nesting in a sisal log I actually bought for show!!..There is only one paie of them and they look a bit different to the Black Collard Barbet in the photos as these have a really bright red face and neck and the "collar" looks like a collar with a hood..I will try and take a photo...getting close to them is a bit tricky....they are fast!!...from Amanda
I have had a pair of black collared barbets in my nesting log since September, they made a second hole at the base of the log and have now vanished. Where do they go? I miss them and hope they return next year
