The Giant Comet Moth

Hello there, TrudyVan here.

I would like to share these beautiful photos of the Comet moth with you.

Madagascar home to the biggest moth, Comet or Moon Moth.

My Son took photos of this beautiful photo's of The Giant Comet or Moon Moth whilst he was on a visit to Madagascar. The pure beauty of these moths take your breathe. The giant comet moth is on the endangered species list. The one he had on his shirt had just come out of its cocoon and one of the gentlemen of the island took the photo's for him.

The latin name for The Giant Comet Moths is Argema mittrei and they are part of the Saturniidae family.

The female Giant Comet Moth The female have lone long tails and their wings can measure over five inches and 9" wingspan and 8" long red tails wing span 5-6 inches.

These moths have the most beautiful brilliant yellow colouring with large red round marks called "eyespots"

The Female Comet moth can lay up to 170 eggs at a time. The caterpillar feeds on the eucalyptus leaves and grow to a rather large size before spinning their cocoon and going into the pupa stage and will stay in their cacoon for around 2 to 6 months all depending on the time of year.

They only eat during the larval stage because the moth does not have a mouth to feed. They spin a mesh netting to hold the pupa safe and has holes in it from which the pupa is able to see. When the pupa hatches when reaches adulthood.

The female Comet Moth will sit on her cocoon and wait for a male to come by and mate.

The Comet Moth have been reared successfully in captivity but it is not a easy thing to do as they will only eat fresh eucalyptus leaves.
