Crested Barbet - small woodpecker
Hello there, TrudyVan here
I love the garden birds that visit my garden. If you want birds to visit your garden you need to have drinking water availiable at all times and it is also a good idea to put out fruits and seeds for them to eat.
Appearance - plumage
The Crested Barbet with its colourful plumage is one of the most beautiful multicoloured birds I know. They are rather tiny birds with a red face and a black crest. They have a lovely yellow breast and black wings that have white specks on them. They also have a black band on its neck. There is also red markings at the end of their bodies.
Diet
The Crested Barbet feeds on friuts, insects such as locusts, flies, ants, bees, wasps. You will often see them on the ground looking for food
Breeding
They make their nests in holes in the trees. They are also monogamous. They fiercely protect the area around their nests. There breeding time is from September through to December. They can be found alone or in pairs.
Habitat
They like large trees and often nest in garden trees and close to water and food.
Location
Crested Barbets are found in South Africa and the most part of Southern Africa.

What a beautiful bird! I had never heard nor seen one before, thank you so much. My backyard and garden, in morning and at dusk, comes to life with more than half a dozen species. Some stay all winter while others are passing through. Cheers, Carmen
My husband n I live in Pierre van Ryneveld, Centurion n we walk every morning before 6am. On our way tall trees grow n in them we hear a Crested Barbett call. This morning we saw one sitting on a garden wall with 'something' in it's mouth, when the bird dropped it, it came to the ground to pick it up. I'm new to the area..but my husband who has lived here for many years is teaching me about the birds and the plants which I find very interesting.
