Barrel Cactus Sea Urchin Cactus

Today I would love to share the beautiful Barrel Cactus or Sea Urchin Cactus that I have in my garden with you.

Barrel Cactus or Sea Urchin Cactus is known as Echinopsis cactaceae

These cactus have beautiful trumpet shaped flowers. They normally open early evening and have a soft perfume, but they only last one day.

They normally only flower when they are about three years old.

Most species produce a lot of basal offsets - new plants.

They love direct sunlight all year long. Normal room temperature is suitable for growing plants but they need a winter rest period of below 50deg to produce flowers in the following season.

They enjoy plenty of water in the growing season and only a little in the rest period. do not let them dry out completely or stand in water.

This is a desert cactus and their stems are globular and dark green.

Most Barrel cactus flowers when the die leave a fleshy berry. Squeeze the seeds out and let them dry for you to plant them out during the next season.

You can also seperate the smaller basal offsets from the main plant and plant them. I have done so with more than average success

The Barrel cactus that I have is called the E. cyriesii Cactus.
