African Greys Best Pet Birds
77Information on congo african grey parrots
Hello there, TrudyVan Here,
I would like to introduce Penny to you, she is my Congo African Grey Parrot and my best pet bird ever.
I got Penny by a reputable Parrot dealer. I had to do a lot of homework before I decided on purchasing Penny. The reason behind my resource is because there are unscrupulous dealers that steal African grey parrot eggs right out of the nests of wild parrots and sell them to unsuspecting people and depleting our natural birds found in the wild. I did not want to fall into that group. Penny comes from a long line of parrots that has been breed in captivity.
I also done a lot of resource on how to feed and what to feed african greys. There are many different views about what the greys diet should be. I will be dealing with that a little later.
Penny is the most adorable tropical pet bird ever. From the first time I saw her beautiful expressive eyes, I was hopelessly lost. I was totally in love. As she is now only 2 years old and still going through the "Adolescent" years there is still so much more she is going to teach me.
We have a porridge by us that is called "Pronutro" excellent for children and all young pets including birds. I made some on and put it into a syringe and fed it to her that way. Like all small babies they mess a lot but she grew strong and fast.
Greys are highly intelligent and will copy everything you do and say. I love to sing and dance and when I put the music on, she starts to sing and dance. She will always be the first to great when I get up in the morning and walking down the passage.
I did learn that when she screeches all I did was tell her in a very stern voice, just like you would to a naughty child. "That is not nice" and she would stop. The only time now that she does screech is when she gets a fright or the wind has come up and blows through the door then I will have to close it as she is gets cold.
As your pet parrot gets older you get to know all her moods. You see it in her face and in her tone of voice. Every Parrot is different just like we are. That is exactly what makes having a pet parrot so very special. You need to spend a lot of time with them and they need plenty of toys to bite, play with and break.
I would freely recommend a pet parrot to anyone that recognizes that owning parrots is lifelong. If you are prepared to care for your feathered friend until she passes away or you do. That is the responsibility you take on.
Getting the right Information on congo african grey parrots is vital. You need to know how to treat your parrot, what to do and how to feed your parrot.
I hope you enjoy this page as much as I enjoyed putting in up.
Kindest regards
TrudyVan

African Greys Love to Perch
African Grey Parrot Foods
This a list of foods that I feed to Penny. Some she likes more than others and you need to find a balance. I also have Penny dewormed every 6 months and please note, I do not do it, my vet does it for me. She tends to pick up these things mainly because she is out of her cage and walks around a lot and loves to dig in the ground. Yes! African Grey Parrots do get worms.
I have a tonic which I put into her fresh water on a daily basis.
She loves her fruit such as apples, grapes, yoghurt, grated cheese, Broccoli, cauliflower, spinach and carrots.
Rice, oats, sunflower seed, peanuts, boiled eggs, pumpkin seeds, turnips, radishes, fresh green beans.
We grow a lot of our vegetable and have our fruit trees so we know that she gets most of her foods which is purely Organic. Good for her and for us.
Fresh water every day is a must and additional water in the summer months.
Some parrots love to bath others do not. If you teach them from very young to bath they do so on their own. They are also extremely found of being sprayed with a light spray in the summer months.

Last spring, our second one living out in the country, we heard something fluttering about in the chimney. From the second floor outside my bathroom door where the chimney runs up to the roof I heard it....

Beautiful pictures! I too fell in love with an African Grey. Have you heard of Alex the famous "brainiac" parrot? Check out my new hub titled "Parrots May be As Intelligent as Chimps and Gorillas". I wonder if there's any way I could use one of your awesome pics on my hub?
Hello again, my friend. I rated you up my friend and shared another of your HubPages. Prosperous Blessings, your friend, VivBounty
So good that you pointed out the importance of buying from a reputable dealer - Penny is lovely.
Thank you for sharing your story about Penny. I love and adore birds. Look forward to read more from you.
I got an Indian Parakeet at very early age. I used to feed it with my hands. But gradually it started to byte me and now does not like to be touched. can u tell me whats going wrong.
You're right, the African Grey is an excellent pet. The Grey is also the most intelligent of all animals.
From the perspective of an experienced large bird handler, one may wish to start with a smaller species than a Grey.
Grey's are so intelligent they have to be stimulated and have plenty of daily interaction as well as many safe destructible toys. If all of this is not provided on a daily basis Grey's are know to to develop behavioral problems.
Very nice hub. Smart birds are a lot of fun. I have 2 cockatoos that are a lot of fun. They really keep you on your toes.
Hi Trudy, it's me again, one who wrote the hub on Alex. I have been meaning to write to you again. I have questions about Penny. I thought I remembered you mentioning that she started talking at 2 months old, but on rereading I can't find it. I would love to know all about any talking she has acquired. I want to write another hub on talking parrots, but I would only include info about Penny with your blessing, of course. You might want to write a hub about her yourself. Did you see my new hub on Batyr the talking elephant? As far as I know, he's the only elephant who ever learned to talk, and he taught himself! I would love to get your reaction to my hub and maybe relate it to talking birds.
Hello TrudyVan, I just wanted to say how much I love this hub. You have done such a mavelous job writing it and conveying your love for Penny. I heard her chatting away in the background as you were speaking to me just now. Keep up the good work.
I was shocked to hear about "deworming" for African grey parrots? I have never ever heard my breeders recommend or speak about it whatsoever; what kind of worms do they get, where do they get worms from? and does anyone have any knowledge about these flour moths and how to keep them at bay, besides keeping a prestine cage? that's not working; every single night they come out, fly around, maybe 2 or 3 and always seem like little demons because they take aim at me, and I don't even see them coming because it is defficult to see them unless they go in front of a television; I have traps out to catch them, and have caught a great many amount, but where are these coming from? I do know they begin from those tiny magotlike wormy looking things and evolve into those ugly moths, I have seen them in grocery stores too. please tell how to rid myself of these monstrous things.
Awesome photos and excellent hub! A+++!! Really enjoyed this - thank you -
Hi TrudyVan awesome pic's!I'm 8 years old and want to buy my own.How cash should I save to buy a grey thanks!
Hi Trudy, I love this page and the photos. She is a beauty. I absolutely share your love for African Greys. I have one too. Oubaas, as naughty as they come and oh so talkative and most of the time, up to a lot of tricks. He is actually very funny and laughs a lot. Not in a parroty way, but just like is human housemates.
Take care
Loraine
Such a gorgeous African Grey Pet there. I love the pictures. Love this hub; say hi to Penny for me.=)
Beautiful pictures! I too fell in love with an African gray. Grey's are thus intelligent they need to be stimulated and have many daily interactions yet as several safe destructible toys.
What a lovely Hub.. I love Greys! They are one of the smartest birds. Last winter I helped an elderly couple w/their aviary. They had over 85 Macaw birds and other types of birds. The aviary was way over 50 feet high. Each cage contained 1-3 birds. My favorite were the Grey! Well, I do not have a favorite, I love them all. But they Greys were so talkative and SO smart. Everytime I entered the aviary, it was the Grey's that greeted me first. They were also the gentlest. They have such sweet dispositions. Thank you so much for this Beautiful Hub and to rekindling my memories of these fine birds.
Excellent information. Thank you for sharing this information. I have resisted the desire to get a parrot because I know it is a life long commitment. I hope more people understand that many parrots develop behavior problems when they are not taken care of properly.
Thank you for the nice post...
